Commuter cycling not reducing driving
Friday, October 16, 2009

The real question should not be is cycling growing around Australia', but is sustainable travel displacing car trips. In Australia, the cities with the highest rates of cycling to work (Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra) have the highest rates of car driving, and generally the lowest walking rates. The cities with the least car driving (Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart), have the lowest cycling rates and (except for Brisbane) the highest rates of walking. more...

Are cycle lanes good for bikes?
Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Cycle lanes can make roads more dangerous for cyclists
because they encourage motorists to drive closer when overtaking bicycles, a
study has found.

Drivers give cyclists a wider berth on roads where there is no lane because
they assume that they should share the road and make more allowance for the
risk of wobbles.

The study, conducted by Leeds and Bolton universities, challenges the approach
taken by many local authorities, which is to promote cycling by painting cycle
lanes and cycle symbols on their roads. It suggests that reducing the speed and
volume of traffic would be more effective in improving cycle safety than narrow
cycle lanes. More...

Breaking down the barriers against cycling to school
Tuesday, September 15, 2009

NZ Transport Agency has recently published a report
investigating the barriers to cycling at intermediate schools.

Transport modes such as walking and cycling, including cycling to school, could
play a key role in combating obesity, climate change and traffic congestion as
well as restoring 'social capital' within communities. The objective of this
research was to identify the specific barriers to school students cycling to
school for six intermediate schools and recommend interventions that would be
effective, acceptable to parents and schools, and favourable to school students
for each of the schools. These specific barriers and solutions were then used to
identify common themes, issues and solutions that might be considered at a
national level, and give more confidence to those who are responsible for
considering and acting on school cycling initiatives.

Four stages of data collection were carried out including the collection of
existing school travel information, site visits, interviews, focus groups and
questionnaires. In order to overcome barriers to cycling to school it is
proposed that the development of genuinely safe and attractive school cycle
networks, cycle training, effective bike storage and the continued
implementation of slow zones around schools (or widespread lower speed limits)
be implemented or given higher priority.  More...

Design a bike share system
Tuesday, September 15, 2009

In 1995, Copenhagen was the first city to introduce a modern bike share system - Bycyklen - or The City Bike. Much has happened since this Bike Share v. 1.0 was launched and, over the past ten years, many large cities now enjoy exciting, new bike share systems. Copenhagen is searching for a bike share system that reflects their city's unique, world-class cycling city culture. Therefore The City of Copenhagen is pleased to launch an open design competition in order to determine how a bike share system v. 3.0 would look and work in the city in the future.  More...

FREE AustCycle Cycling Training in NSW Extended to 31 March 2010
Tuesday, September 1, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FREE Cycling Training

Extended to 31 March 2010

AustCycle is the result of over a decade of research, which has identified a strong need to develop a national cycling training scheme.  It is a new venture designed to be the cycling equivalent of AUSTSWIM, which counts for approximately 400,000 swimming class participants each week.  AustCycle seeks to take advantage of and contribute to the significant increase in popularity that we have seen in cycling in recent years.  This popularity has been fed by factors such as a concern for the environment, health and fitness, economic factors and the pure fun of riding bikes.

AustCycle is a joint venture between Cycling Australia, the Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) and the Bicycle Federation of Australia (BFA) and was formally established in 2008 to deliver high quality cycling training, by accredited AustCycle Teachers to Australians of all ages so that they can ride further, more often, more confidently and more safely. This will result in more active, healthier, happier Australians and a safer, cleaner environment.

Throughout 2009 The Department of Environment and Climate Change, NSW (DECC) have provided a significant number of DECC Cycling Vouchers, each worth $360, FREE to companies, councils and community groups to provide adult AustCycle training courses for everyone from beginners to experienced riders.

Since its launch, the DECC Voucher Program has provided more than 150 groups with FREE cycling training.  We are happy to announce that this program has now been extended to March 31, 2010, giving hundreds more the opportunity to take up this exciting offer.

For further information about the vouchers, contact DECC via email at OnYourBike@environment.nsw.gov.au.  To apply for a voucher, simply fill in the DECC Faxback Form available on the AustCycle website.

Find out more about AustCycle at www.austcycle.com.au.  For more information on this release, please contact Allison Maher on info@austcycle.com.au or 0414 544 311.
