About the BFA
The Bicycle Federation of Australia (BFA) is the national peak body representing people who ride bicycles for recreation, transport, tourism, health & fitness and fun. It aims to improve the environment for cycling and encourage more Australians to ride more often. The BFA comprises cycling organisations from States and Territories within Australia. It is a nonprofit organisation and was established in 1979.
The BFA also indirectly represents several million Australians who ride bicycles for fun, sport and transport because bikes are useful, healthy and less expensive than most other transport modes.
The purpose of the BFA is to promote and support:
- cycling as a means of maintaining and improving the environment and to establish and maintain the BFA Cycle for the Environment fund for the specific purpose of supporting the environmental objects of the BFA
- cycling as a popular, practical, healthy and environmentally sustainable form of transport, recreation and tourism
- enjoyable cycling
- best practice in cycling facilities and programs to support cycling
- the creation of a transport system that is environmentally sustainable, convenient, comfortable, coherent, safe and attractive for all users
- aware and wellinformed cyclists and motorists and
- wellinformed and supportive governments and community.
The BFA's major activities are:
- advocacy at a federal government level to benefit all Australians who ride bicycles
- sharing information with Members and helping to strengthen them
- projects and events that contribute to the work of the BFA and produce benefits for cyclists.
